Alcohol and driving

Alcohol use is the cause of numerous fatal car accidents involving girls and boys.
Drunk drivers usually underestimate the danger and believe they are capable of driving properly.

To know the alcohol concentration limits

Before driving, you must wait at least 2 hours for each glass of alcohol drunk, otherwise the psycho-physical alterations involve:

  • reduction of concentration, clarity and prudence
  • reduction of the visual field: tunnel vision in which what is lateral disappears
  • misperception of danger
  • incorrect assessment of distances and speed
  • increased sensitivity to glare of the headlights
  • impaired motor coordination
  • slowing of reflexes
  • misperception of reality.

The simultaneous use of alcohol and drugs further increases the risks and judgment of the driver.

The Highway Code provides rules for young people and novice drivers:

  • absolute ban on drinking alcohol for children under 21 years of age
  • ban on drinking in the first 3 years of driving license B
  • more restrictive sanctions for those driving under the influence of alcohol.

For those over 21, the alcohol content should not exceed 0.5 grams of alcohol per liter of blood during roadside checks.

This rate is not the same for everyone but depends on various factors such as age, sex, weight, state of health, full or empty stomach, time elapsed since intake.
One drink pushes a woman over the limit while a man needs two drinks.

For young people, the road risks are greater because they are added to inexperience, impulsiveness, the desire to overcome limits and phenomena such as poly-abuse and binge drinking.

It is advisable to read Alcohol and driving by the Ministry of Health, with information on driving under the influence of alcohol and the rules of the Highway Code.
